Table Talk Tuesday With Jessica Short

Table Talk Tuesday With Jessica Short

Another Tuesday, another Table Talk. My next guest is someone who I have thoroughly enjoyed chatting with over the past few weeks, and after hearing her answers to the following questions, I realized we have even more in common than I thought! Help me give a warm, virtual welcome to Jess.

Do you remember the moment you decided to start blogging? What made you take the plunge?

I’ve had three blogs so this is a hard question to answer! My first blog was really more of a journal in high school. My second one was a travel blog when I studied abroad for a semester in London. But I consider Short & Sweet my first “real” blog!

A little backstory for why I started my blog: I got married in January of 2016, and officially moved from my home in Oregon to where my husband and I went to school in California. Many of my best friends were still in Oregon and my husband was still a student, so I felt really lonely. I realized I needed to find something other than Netflix to fill my time, but didn’t really have any hobbies because for the past year or so I was wedding planning, getting ready to graduate, job searching, and then working two jobs, so I didn’t have time for it. I really enjoy processing through writing, so I thought doing a blog would be great, but I had no idea what to blog about. My husband and another friend gave me the idea of doing a blog about trying out different things every month, and I thought that was a great idea since most blogs have only one niche. I launched my blog in June 2016 after lots of prep, and it has been such a great thing to keep me busy!

Can you give me the elevator pitch for why someone should read your blog?

The Short & Sweet blog is different from any other blog! It is an experiment, a journey if you will, of rediscovering interests and adventuring into new ones. It is about making time purposeful, being adventurous, and having fun! Each month, I choose a new hobby/activity/skill to learn and blog about my experience. It could be a new passion or I could never want to do it again, but this is the time of life to try new things!

I love what you say in your About page on your blog: “I want to prove you can do something fun and meaningful with your time, even if you don’t have much of it.” I think a lot of us, myself included, can sometimes feel as if we don’t have enough time in the day to get everything done. What’s your advice for making time for the fun and meaningful things in life?

That is a real struggle I have every day! Two things that have helped me make time for fun things are 1) Make an action plan! Even if it’s just one day or afternoon a month, put it on your calendar and plan something fun to do, either by yourself or with friends. And protect that time! Don’t let other things get in the way. 2) Once you make that plan, tell people who can keep you accountable, who will remind you to take a day off or to spend time on yourself even though it may feel counterproductive. I read a great quote the other day: “I’m learning that to rest is to not be weak.” Don’t feel guilty for spending time on doing things you love – see it as an opportunity to be rejuvenated so you can be the best you you can be!

What is your number one goal for your blog?

I want to show people that they can make time to try new things and that their time is valuable – it shouldn’t be wasted on watching TV all day or doing things that don’t have meaning! (Although I will admit, I’m a huge Netflix fan!)

A lot of 20-somethings battle with feelings of self-doubt and questioning if they are good enough, especially after graduating college and during the job hunt process. How have you managed to stay positive and not be too hard on yourself?

I really struggled with staying positive during the job search after college – it’s rough! I had this idea in my mind that I had to find my dream job right after college and if it was anything else I would be settling (even though I had no idea what my dream job even was). But once I realized that everyone has to start somewhere and that I wasn’t chained to a job for forever if I didn’t love it, that really helped. We have our whole lives to work, so it’s not the end of the world if we don’t find the perfect job right away!

If you had a life motto, what would it be? (Besides “Taylor Swift has just as many hours in her day as you do”, which I also loved on your About page. 🙂

Thank you! I love Tswizzle 🙂 I think my life motto would be Choose joy! I tend to be a little bit of a pessimist, and sometimes the way I feel about things can really shape my attitude. I have two “choose joy” signs – one at home and one at work – to remind me that I can choose something else. I can’t control what happens in my life, but I can control the way I respond to things.

What three things are at the top of your gratitude list right now?

My husband – he is spending hours every day studying for his MCAT exam to get into med school, but he still makes our relationship a priority and serves me so well.

My church – I have such a great community through my weekly community group and in serving in the high school ministry; every time I’m with them I feel refreshed!

My job – I feel really blessed to have not only a full time job, but a job I truly enjoy, coworkers that are friends, and a company that I can get behind.

Who is your biggest “girl crush” in terms of female entrepreneurs, celebrities, or any other woman you look up to, and why?

I have a huge girl crush on Shauna Niequist – she is an AMAZING blogger, author, and speaker. I just got her new book, Present Over Perfect, and it is really shaping the way I view myself and how I want to spend my time and energy. I would HIGHLY recommend her book! Also I love Blake Lively, she is just the cutest.

Your blog is all about rediscovering interests and finding new ones. I’m curious what your main hobbies and interests were as a child, and how they have changed as you’ve grown up?

I had SO many different interests as a kid! I was always really into art and crafty things, and I even went to an art school in junior high. I also did theater and musicals from a young age through high school. I did ballet for 7 years and then transitioned to cheerleading in high school, and I have always been a big reader. But I would say one of my huge passions ever since I was a kid was singing – I was always in choir and in high school I led worship at my church. I wanted to be the lead singer of a band for a really long time, but I ended up doing Communications instead. I still love singing, and I am definitely one of those people who will belt it out along with the radio in the car 🙂 Although I don’t do all of those hobbies anymore, I enjoy seeing other people do them and participating in them when I can!

I have to throw a fun one in here to wrap this up. If you could be any animal, which  animal would you want to be?

This is always a hard one for me – I would probably either be a horse because they are so majestic and free, or a golden retriever because they are so loyal and cuddly!

Thanks to Jess for being a great interviewee, and thank you to all of you for continuing to read my blog! As always, feel free to email me or reach out on social media if you’d like to be featured on a Table Talk Tuesday. And be sure to follow Jess on her blog, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Sunshine Blogger Award

Sunshine Blogger Award

I found out yesterday that I was nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award by Morgan at Boho En Route. According to her blog, the award is: “an award given to bloggers by bloggers. It is given to bloggers who are positive and creatively inspire others in the blogosphere.

Thanks so much to Morgan for nominating me! It really made my day to hear that someone thinks of my blog as positive and inspiring!

Morgan came up with some great questions for all of her nominees to answer, so here goes:

1. What is your number one goal to attain in this life?

For a while now I’ve bee thinking that my ultimate life goal is to write a book. I’m not sure how and I’m not sure when, but I am determined to make it happen at some point!

2.  What made you decide to start a blog?

I think I answered this in Confetti and Curves’ Behind The Blog interview with me, but I originally started a blog because my dad suggested it. More recently, I decided to start writing again because I enjoy getting my thoughts out and sharing advice with people through my posts. I also like the community aspect of it, and getting to meet other bloggers virtually through comments and reading their blogs.

3. Who/what inspires you?

Lately I’ve been really inspired by two podcasts that I’ve been listening to. I talked about one of them, Dear Sugar, in my April Favorites blog. The second podcast is very similar, and it’s hosted by two of my favorite YouTubers: Ingrid Nilsen and Cat Valdes. It’s called Ladies Who Lunch, and they give advice and talk about their personal experiences with certain topics. Both of these podcasts inspire me because I am always in awe of people who are able to help others through giving advice, as well as being so open and honest about their own life. I aspire to be able to do the same with my blog.

4. What creates your happiness?

I know the correct answer should be “I do.” But if I think of it a bit more objectively, I think that I find happiness from my relationships (boyfriend, family, friends), hobbies (writing this blog and taking improv classes) and a small amount of alone time to clear my head and just relax.

5. Describe your perfect vacation.

My perfect vacation would be a good blend of relaxation and adventure. I love going to the beach and just hanging out and being lazy most of the time, but then also taking some time to explore the area and maybe go shopping, try some restaurants, or go to a museum. I’m actually going to the beach with my family and boyfriend next weekend, so I’m sure I’ll write about it in a post afterwards!

6. Favorite place you’ve visited?

I was actually thinking about this place the other day. I loved Barcelona when I went there for one weekend during my semester abroad! It was such a fun, beautiful city filled with culture. Read my old blog to hear all about my experience there, if you’re curious.

7. What state/country do you currently live in?

I live in the U.S., in Texas!

8. Do you plan on staying there for ‘good’?

I’m not 100% sure. I love it here, and definitely see myself living here for the foreseeable future. However, I wouldn’t rule out moving somewhere else later in life if the opportunity came up and I decided I wanted to!

9. What are you currently trying to improve with yourself?

The main thing I am trying to improve on is taking my health and fitness more seriously. I’ve been trying to eat a little better and work out more often.

10. Do you enjoy reading as much as writing?

I do! I’ve written a few book reviews on this blog. Unfortunately having a full time job has made it a lot more difficult for me to read, but it is definitely something I enjoy!

11. Did you excel/enjoy writing particularly growing up as a kid?

Yes and yes. Writing was always one of my strengths growing up. I remember in middle school my friend and I would write stories together all the time, and when I got into high school my favorite classes were always my English classes.

Now for my nominees!

These are blogs that I’ve enjoyed reading, and bloggers that have shown an interest in my blog as well.

My 11 Questions for the nominees:

  1. What is your main goal for your blog?
  2. What are you most proud of?
  3. Who is your current favorite singer, and/or what is your current favorite song?
  4. What do you do when you need to de-stress/relax?
  5. If you won the lottery, what would you buy?
  6. Where do you feel most at home/what is your “happy place”?
  7. What is one skill you wish you were better at?
  8. What are three words you’d use to describe yourself?
  9. Which city/country do you most want to visit some day?
  10. What do you do to overcome writer’s block?
  11. What is your greatest strength?

The Fun Questions Tag

Hey guys! I wanted to write something that would allow you all to get to know me a little better, and I came across this Fun Questions Tag on a few other blogs and thought it would be, well, fun! Hope you enjoy reading these facts about me!

1) When is your birthday?

March 6

2) What are your three favorite colors?

4) Are you addicted to YouTube?

I am, actually! I started really following YouTubers about 4 years ago, and to this day it is still one of my favorite forms of entertainment.

5) What are your three favorite shows on TV or YouTube or both?

Three of my favorite Youtube channels to watch are: Ingrid Nilsen, Grace Helbig and Colleen Ballinger.

Three of my favorite TV shows are: The Office, Orange is the New Black and Vampire Diaries.

6) What are three qualities you like in a best friend?

I’d say three really important qualities for me would be: honesty, loyalty and compassion. I want someone who will support me and be there for me no matter what, and someone who will be caring and always take my feelings into consideration as well.

7) Do you like your name?

I do! I’ve always liked Shelly because I feel it fits me very well, and I like that it is unique enough to be interesting and different, but not so unique that nobody has ever heard of it before. And my middle name, Ray, is my dad’s middle name. I like it for the same reasons I like Shelly. The spelling is typically the way men spell it (most girls spell it Rae), so I think that adds a little bit of a twist which I like.

8) If you have the choice to pick your own name, what will it be?

Hmm that’s a hard one. I’ve always liked the name Rose! And when I was younger I liked the name Myra, but now I kind of think it sounds like an old person name haha.

 9) What is your fantasy dream?

I would love to go back to Europe some day and travel to all of the places I haven’t been yet.

10) Do you wear makeup?

Yes I do, though as I’ve grown up I’ve gotten more and more comfortable going without. But my everyday makeup normally includes tinted moisturizer, concealer, a tiny bit of powder foundation, mascara, and a little bit of eyeshadow and eyeliner. Nothing too fancy!

11) What makes you cry?

I actually cry fairly easily. I will admit that I have cried watching proposal videos on YouTube, as well as during a number of chick flicks.

12) What makes you angry?

I really don’t get angry very often at all. The times that I can remember being really angry had to do with someone doing something that I found morally wrong or offensive, or someone being outright rude and hurtful to me and refusing to apologize or own up to it.

13) What makes you happy?

Spending time with my family, friends and my boyfriend. We don’t have to be doing anything too crazy, I just feel happier when I’m around the people I love! 🙂

14) What is “Fangirling?”

How I felt when I saw Robert Pattinson filming Remember Me in New York City, and I found myself joining a throng of girls and literally chasing after him down the street and screaming. I don’t even like him that much, I just got so excited to be seeing a celebrity! Really embarrassing, I know. This picture is an actual picture I took- I was actually super close to him!

15) What are your 3 favorite snacks?

Chips and salsa, pistachios, cookies (or any type of sweets really).

16) What are your 3 favorite meals?

Baked chicken with brown rice and broccoli; chicken enchiladas with black beans and rice; lasagna or any pasta with a side caesar salad.

17) What are your three favorite drinks?

Water (I drink SO MUCH water each day), Sprite, Lemonade

18) Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I thought that’s what I’ve been doing….

  4. I am extremely afraid of snakes
  5. I am a major Harry Potter nerd
  6. I was in theater and choir in high school and I performed in musicals
  7. I started wearing glasses when I was three (I mostly just wear contacts now)
  8. I hate having wet hair for some reason, so I always blow-dry it
  9. My first memory is from when I was only nine months old
  10. I went to a tiny private school from elementary through middle school (my class only had 20 people total).

20) What are your three favorite things to do?

  1. I love hanging out in coffee shops and reading or writing a blog or just talking with friends/family/whoever was lucky enough to join me
  2. I love live music, so I always enjoy going to concerts and music festivals
  3. I love being outside (swimming, taking walks, etc)
